For the Singers:
Okay peeps, I've gotten a lot of confusion and concern over the last few days over clothing and other behavioral things.
I want you all to not worry! These things I've been blogging about to warn you about apply really only to the most conservative and religious of Israeli society, and are simply meant as an FYI when we are in the presence of the more conservative.
So, Ladies:
TOPS: As long as your shirts cover your shoulders and your cleavage you will be FINE. Elbows are only a concern in certain neighborhoods (like the Orthodox Jewish area of Jerusalem) and in some religious sites. My suggestion is that you bring a SCARF on tour with you, a long scarf that kinda doubles as a shawl (Pashmina scarves unfold to become veritable blankets, so they can work for you.) These scarves can be used to cover your head and arms, which may be necessary in some areas of Israeli neighborhoods and WILL be necessary in many religious sites we will be visiting. Just keep the scarf with you in your backpack/day bag so you can use it when you need to. Otherwise, don't worry about exposing your elbows. Worry about covering your shoulders and cleavage, but not so much your elbows. All the travel guides I have read say a lightweight scarf/shawl is the way to go for covering your head and elbows. If you can't find one, I'm sure you will be able to buy one for cheap once we arrive.
BOTTOMS: Just make sure your knees are covered and you will be okay. For shorts, stick to Capris (unless we're in Tel Aviv - the scene is totally different there.) Skirts are fine as long as they are long enough to cover your knees. You don't need to wear jeans everywhere you go.
And, gentlemen:
You don't have to worry much at all about dress. Remember your yamulkes for religious sites where you will have to cover your head and wear shorts that are on the longer side and you will be fine.
Three days! So exciting. If you have any more questions for me, please don't hesitate to ask.
:)
